Can you still love your body while wanting to change it?

After a summer of indulging, I decided it was time to really hone in on my eating habits and my fitness routine. Part of this process for me includes finding out my weight and body fat percentage. After I did my fitness analysis, I was floored to see that I gained 5 pounds over the summer. I knew that my clothes were fitting a little bit tighter but I didn’t want to believe that I was gaining weight. Yes, I still feel confident in my skin, but I am ready to tone up and push my body. This brings me to my topic for the day: Can we still love our bodies while wanting to change them?

So, is this okay for me, someone who promotes body positivity and strong mindset shifts, to want to change my body? I am going to be blunt and say it is totally okay for me to want to improve and gain strength within myself. Changing our composition does not mean we don’t love who we are.

I have to say that it is great if you are looking to improve aesthetically, as long as your mind is in the right place. Changing the composition of our bodies is something we should look at as personal self-improvement, and we do it because we want to see what our bodies can do; not because we are ashamed by what their current state is.

One of the most amazing things about our bodies is that they can change! We can lean out, tone up, gain muscle, add mass, etc. There is no shame in being proud of your body, the process, and the outcome. The one thing you have to think about is WHY you are wanting to change your body. Don’t do it out of a place of spite and unworthiness, do it from a place of power and dedication!

Neghar Foonani once wrote in her blog, “Making changes to your body can be both fun and challenging, provided that change doesn’t stem from a notion of unworthiness.”

So, if you’re into the idea of body change because you want to see what might happen if you shift your focus to body transformation,  kudos to you! The beautiful thing about this life is that you get to make your own choices.

Love your body and be embrace the process FOR YOU.
